Smoke Alarm Safety

Check the manufacturer’s instructions on how to change your smoke alarm batteries and to determine what type of battery you need; most smoke alarms use a rectangular 9 volt battery

Change the batteries twice a year—when you change your
clocks in the Fall and Spring

Have a family fire drill to make sure everyone in your household knows how to safely escape and where to meet up in the case of a fire

Test smoke alarms every month by pressing the test button

Install smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom as well as on every level of the home (don’t forget about the attic!)

Install alarms on ceilings or high up on walls (at least 10 feet from the stove in the kitchen)

Replace smoke alarms every 10 years
